Busy times in Devils Lake, ND!! Fish are biting and ice conditions are fantastic! The weather is looking to be a bit nicer too for the extended forecast.
This weekend is the famous Devils Lake Ice Tournament. It is such an amazing event! Lots of prizes and chances to win! The tournament begins at 1pm on Six Mile Bay. Anglers will be allowed onto the ice starting at 11am. Good luck to everyone planning to fish!
Ed’s will be selling minnows, spikes, lures, tackle, minnow buckets, and a few other ice fishing related items from 10:30 to 1pm. Ed’s will also have a free Chilli and bread at the bar for anglers to enjoy after the tournament!
As for fishing! We have had a very solid bite the last 10 days on walleyes and perch. We are fishing deeper bowls, brush, and old shorelines for our best results. Anywhere from 24-32 feet seems to be a good starting point most days. We are catching some nice perch, medium perch, and there are some smaller ones mixed in as well. Nice to see the different classes of perch. Some days a spoon or rattle bait is the ticket and other days a pencil weight with a ratfinkee and or tungsten loaded with spikes is what they want. There are walleyes mixed with these perch as well.
Most mornings and late afternoons we spend in shallower water looking for walleyes (10-22 feet). We like to work structure. Flooded timber, rocks piles and roads all can be very good. As the sun comes up the fish often become sluggish. Move deeper and look for more aggressive fish.
Good luck to all! Hopefully you catch some fish or maybe even win an awesome prize at the tournament!
Remember to Head to Ed’s for all your fishing needs!!
