Wind, wind, and more wind… did we mention the wind? This week has definitely been a battle with it. Wednesday gave us a beautiful spring day though, and anglers who made it out found some good fishing. If we can finally string together a stretch of consistent temps and lighter winds, the bite is really going to pop off.
Water temps are currently sitting in the mid-50s. Cooler weather this weekend may knock temps back a bit, but things are looking to warm up again heading into next weekend.
Casting has produced some great catches this week:
• Jigs with paddle tails continue to be the go-to
• Orange, green, and white have been productive colors
• Focus on wind-blown shorelines
• Try keeping the boat in 6–8 feet and cast toward shore
There’s still very little weed growth, so most shorelines and bottoms remain clean.
Bobber fishing has also been putting fish in the boat:
• Leeches
• Nightcrawlers
• Minnows
We like to locate fish by casting first, then set bobbers once we find a pocket of active fish. And don’t be afraid to fish both at the same time—North Dakota allows two rods per person!
Hopefully this May wind eventually blows itself out and gives us the beautiful summer we’re all waiting for. The good news? The fish are there and getting more active every day!
