High winds the last weekend made fishing basically impossible. Things did calm down at the beginning of this week but the high winds muddied up many areas of the lake. This can be good and bad. Some parts of the lake have good looking water that isn’t too clear and isn’t too muddy and other parts are too muddy and can make fishing a bit more of a challenge.
Walleye fishing continues to be best with trolling crankbaits. This can be done with leadcore, snap weights, and long lining. Most of us prefer leadcore because it is less line to let out and we can use many different baits with different depth charts. Try to match the hatch when picking crankbait colors and sizes. Devils Lake doesn’t have any smelt, hearing, or shad. This leaves the fish to eat the young of the year game fish. Walleyes, Perch, Northern Pike, White Bass, and some Crappies. All of these can be found inside of the walleyes when cleaned this time of year. Jigging rock piles and current areas with vertical jigging baits will continue to get better as the water temp continues to drop. Blade baits, Rippin Raps, and Jigging Raps are all worth trying in these areas.
The number of pike being caught is definitely on the rise. Trolling crankbaits for them this time of year can be very productive. The same with the White Bass
We have been hearing good reports of ducks and geese in the area. Good luck to anyone that is able to get out this fall. Pheasant opener is this weekend!
The bait shop will continue to have open water tackle stocked for a month or so weather dependent. It’s crazy to think we only two months away from possibly ice fishing. We have a few changes coming to the bait shop this fall. This will allow us to better organize and stock more tackle and supplies.
Head to Eds!
