Hopefully everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend! This is certainly a busy time of year with graduations and everything else that goes on in our day to day lives.
As for the bite on Devils Lake, ND. Devils Lake is fishing well; however, she can be a bit tricky from day to day. It’s all about conditions…we have had very little wind of late, add the clear water in many parts of the lake and it creates tricky fishing. The absolute key is to find the right color of water. If you can find darker stained water, you will more than likely find walleyes. We do need a bit of wind this time of year to help stir up the water which seems to get the walleyes a bit more fired up.
Keys to catching walleyes in clear water.
- Long casts! The farther the better!
- Change up your retrieve. Pauses, twitches, jerks, etc.
- Change up your lures. Cranks, plastics, live bait.
- Try a bit deeper. Often the first drop off out of shallow water will be fantastic.
- Look for stained water. Sometimes just a little stain will make a big difference.
As for bass and pike, the bite has been fantastic! Shore fishermen are doing great fishing the bridges, coulees, and culvert areas of the Devils Lake system. Mimic minnows, sliders, ripple shads, countdowns, shadraps, and flicker shads have all been very good. Leeches under a bobber are deadly this time of year as well.
Remember, this time of year it is common to catch nicer fish. Please take a picture and throw them back! Good luck to all and remember to HEAD TO EDS for all your fishing needs!
