Late Summer Report from Devils Lake, ND…
Summer is moving way too fast! Devils Lake has been fishing good overall this summer. We’ve said this before but it must be stated again. The good and tricky aspect about Devils Lake is that fish are scattered all over it. From the west end to the east end, from 4 feet to 40 feet. There are pockets all over that can be good. The tricky part is that they move around a lot this time of year as there are so many things going on with hatches, bait, water temps, thermocline, etc.
Best methods that we are using to catch fish right now.
- Bottom bouncer and spinner. We like to use a third of a crawler or a plastic. We are working 10-26 feet of water. Use a 2 oz bottom bouncer and you should be good to go in most depths.
- Slip bobbering or vertical jigging on humps, rock piles, or weed lines. Seems like some days the bobbers really go and other days dead sticking with a jig is the ticket.
- Trolling deeper water with leadcore. We are trolling 20-30 feet most days. Seems like the ‘Old Shoreline’ is a good area to work. Salmo Hornets, Flickershads, and Rapalas all will catch fish. #5 is a great size most days.
At the end of the day, cover water! Move a lot and find your pocket. Good luck to all and remember to Head to Ed’s for all your fishing needs!!
