We have certainly had a beautiful fall. It’s good for everything except making ice. Last Saturday Devils Lake had a storm with very strong winds. Much of the lake opened back up so in a sense it’s a bit of a start over for Devils Lake as far as making ice goes in many areas. There are some areas where people are fishing and everyday we should hopefully build more ice. The temp last night was 10 degrees which will help. The extended forecast isn’t the coldest so we are going to have a slow build of ice for awhile.
So what does it all mean…We do not recommend driving utv/atv/Snobears out at this time. There are some areas where you probably can do this; however, ice is a bit inconsistent and you really have to know where you are going. If you are going out we suggest walking and make sure you have: rope, floatation device, ice picks with you. It is also very wise to go with other people. Do not go out in the dark and make sure you come back before dark.
The fish have been cooperating when we have been able to fish. Perch and walleyes have been aggressive and the winter is looking promising! Buckshots with a minnow head are super deadly this time of year for perch and walleye.
If you are planning to come make sure to talk with local bait shops, resorts, and guides. Ice is going to get there eventually! Stay patient and again if you do decide to go out, please bring the proper gear and take your time!
Remember to HEAD TO ED’S for all your fishing, gas, propane, and on and off sale needs!
