Devils Lake is in a bit of a transition period as the majority of the ice is not safe for fishing. We have had some strong winds of late mixed in with some warmer temps which has really deteriorated the majority of the ice on the lake. There are some places you can still get out; however, everyday the conditions change a bit and ice that was fine yesterday may not be today. We suggest fishing from small boats or from shore at this point.
As for the bite…
There are some bites happening near bridges, coulees, and culvert areas. We do not really have any runoff this year so we may not see as strong of a bite in the coulees as we did last year. Even with the lower runoff of water fish are still being caught. Best times can vary as fish are traveling and staging to spawn. Seems like you get flurries throughout the day. The later afternoon to dark bite is usually the most consistent time to fish if you have to pick a window to fish.
Jig/plastic combos are deadly this time of year! We have also caught fish on jig/minnow, lindy rigs, and slip bobbers with a minnow. We are catching walleyes, pike, and even a few white bass. Please remember that the spawn is very near and larger fish should be released to do their thing. They are the future of our lake. Keep the smaller males and take a picture of the nicer ones. The fishing Gods will thank you one day!!
