January 13th Fishing Report

We are getting some COLD temperatures over the next few days! This will really help the ice conditions around the lake. We are averaging 10-15 inches in most areas. There are still some areas with less, so continue to use caution. The cracks are still a concern and they will continue to change with the colder temps. Some people are starting to drive vehicles around. We would still suggest utv’s/snobears at this time. After this cold snap more than likely ice will be good enough in many areas for vehicles.

As for the bite…It’s been a bit of a roller coaster ride. One day we get them really well and the next day it is slower. Hard to say exactly why it’s been so up and down. There has been a fair amount of traffic and it seems like once bites are established many other anglers find their way to it. The key to the best fishing on Devils Lake is to fish away from the crowd. Devils Lake has fish in every bay. Try finding the pockets or sweet spots by drilling more holes and getting away from the crowd.

Walleyes are best in the mornings and late afternoons. Seems like most days a buckshot and minnow head is the ticket. We have also done well with a full minow and a smaller jig deadsticking. A split shot and plain hook with a full minnow under a bobber can be deadly as well! Play around and see how they are reacting to your presentation and adjust from there.

As for the perch. They have been a bit tricky. Here to today and gone tomorrow seems to be a common theme. We are catching lots of different size classes of perch from 7 inch up and comers all the way to 14 inch JUMBOS! Pencil weights with tungsten jig and spike have been the ticket most days. We have also had some days when they are fired up and then they like a buckshot and minnow dead. We have caught them as shallow as 20 ft all the way out to 44. The name of the game of perch fishing is mobility. The person that cuts the most holes, usually wins!!

This cold snap will allow more places to be fished as well so look for good fishing to happen out there somewhere. We have over 200,000 acres to play on so there are lots of places to check!!

Remember to Head to Ed’s for all your fishing needs!!
